A deck should feel like a natural extension of your home and the landscape around it. The right one gives you level, comfortable space for gathering, an easy way down into the yard, and a view you'll want to use every evening.
BayTerra designs and builds custom decks for homes across Sonoma, Napa, and Marin Counties, planning each one alongside the plantings, lighting, and hard surfaces around it. With more than 15 years of experience, a licensed team, and transparent communication from the first walk-through, you'll see how the finished yard comes together long before construction begins.

“Steph and his crew did a massive backyard renovation project for us that came out beautifully. From grading to installing French drains to making suggestions for materials, he and the crew were outstanding... He and his crew are great problem solvers, and they checked in frequently to make sure we were happy with the results.”

A Deck That Fits Your Home, Your Yard, and the Way You Live
Choosing a deck contractor who’s already thinking about the rest of your property means fewer decisions on your plate and a yard that comes together as one space.
-
Your deck, plantings, lighting, and hard surfaces are designed together, so the finished yard looks intentional and complete.
-
We work with the slope, sun, and sightlines your property already has, designing around them rather than around a standard footprint.
-
The same team stays with your project from the first walk-through to the final detail, and they treat your home with care while they're there.
-
You'll know what's happening and when, from the design conversation through to the first evening you spend out there.
What Your Deck Design and Build Covers

“Bay Terra did an amazing job on the creation of a beautiful backyard at a new house we purchased in Santa Rosa. The construction work was substantial and took a fair amount of time but we never felt like the work interfered with our lives... We enjoyed working with the various teams and they were always respectful of our needs.”

Deck Questions North Bay Homeowners Ask
-
Four things drive the cost of a custom deck in Sonoma, Napa and Marin Counties: the square footage, how far the deck sits above grade, the decking material, and what the deck has to connect to. A low deck on a level lot is a different project from a raised deck on a hillside that needs engineered footings, stairs and railings. Grade and access usually move the number more than size does, which is why the estimate follows the site walk.
-
Composite and PVC decking handle the summer heat, UV exposure and seasonal wet-dry swings of the North Bay with no annual sealing, and they hold their color longer. Natural wood such as redwood costs less up front, weathers to a softer look many homeowners prefer, and can be sanded and refinished rather than replaced. On properties in wildfire-prone parts of Sonoma, Napa and Marin, ignition resistance is part of the material conversation too, so the choice gets settled during design rather than before it.
-
Unincorporated Sonoma County exempts a deck from a building permit only when it sits no more than 30 inches above grade measured from the walking surface, is not over a basement or story below, and is not part of an accessible route (Permit Sonoma). Anything taller, anything attached to the house, and anything serving a required exit door needs a permit. Marin County treats decks as permit-required work, since they do not appear on its exemption list (Marin County CDA). Incorporated cities, including the City of Sonoma, run their own building departments, so the jurisdiction follows the property address.
-
Design and permitting set the schedule for most deck projects, not construction. Material selection and the design come first, plan review through the local building department follows, and for a straightforward residential deck the build itself is the shortest phase. Slope, engineered footings, stair runs and whether the deck ties into patios or walkways all extend the timeline. You get a project-specific schedule alongside the design.
-
Start with the California contractor license number and verify it through the CSLB. From there, the questions worth asking are whether the builder has worked on your kind of grade, whether the deck is being designed with the rest of the yard or drawn as a standalone structure, and whether they can point to finished projects in your county. BayTerra Landscapes holds California contractor license #1031984 and works as a design and build landscape contractor across Sonoma, Napa and Marin Counties.
